We want lower costs and better access to care. “Medicare for All” is not the solution; we must have market forces at work. As a physician from New York recently told me, “Do not focus on Single Payer. Focus instead on Single Pool.” Insurance companies have an ethical responsibility to cover as many as possible at reasonable premiums. Personal responsibility is part of the equation as we maintain a compassionate safety net for those who need it. We cannot effectively manage our health care strictly from the offices of government bureaucrats. There is a sweet spot between government guarantees and raw capitalism.
